SPIEGEL Geschichte: Medieval Times
A series of four illustrations for German magazine SPIEGEL Geschichte. The four illustrations accompany an interview about the lives of people in the medieval times.
Inspired by iconic medieval book illumination, I developed a floral grid for the double-page spread, in which various “history windows” open up, through which different facets of people's lives in medieval Europe and beyond can be observed. I really enjoyed exploring the rich culture of medieval artworks and finding my own approach to them. The interview dispels some preconceptions about the Middle Ages, so it was important for me to reflect this in my illustrations. For example, in the bathing scene, which is based on a book illustration of a knight taking a bath from the Codex Manesse. It's also an absolute dream to be able to draw little demons and strange creatures reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch in this context.
